Fernado Alonso got McLarens first pole position of the year by pipping his team mate Lewis Hamilton - who finished just a tenth behind the double world champion to secure an all McLaren front row.Felipe Massa's string of poles came to an end,but he's still looking dangerous with third position on the grid in a car that is beautiful in race conditions.
As happens at Monaco both McLaren drivers were held up by traffic(Williams Mark Webber) on their final lap - Fernando's experience got him the edge over Hamilton who held his nerve despite a bit of damp falling from the sky at times making track conditions a little unpredictable.
Kimi Raikkonen suffered drama in the second session when he clipped a barrier breaking his suspension and in an ironic twist parked the car exactly where Michael Schumacher had his controversial parking malfunction in qualifying last year;Felipe Massa,in an effort to avoid hitting Raikkenon had nowhere to go other than to park right next to the Fin's "parked Ferrari".This after Kimi limped to the pits rendered the Fin out of the rest of the qualifying(see sketchy video footage below).
Other typical Monaco drama occurred when the very experienced David Coulthard -who was doing well - suffered a final qualifying session ban when he compromised Hiekki Kovalinen's hot lap when he was on a slow down lap.Coulthard said he did not do it deliberately and despite now starting from the back is still hoping to get in the points along with Kimi Raikkonen - well this is Monaco and anything can happen.Jenson Buttons spirits were up after a good session finishing 10th.It is also suspected that Hamlton could be on a "heavy fuel strategy" - this could be interesting because heavy strategies have failed for Alonso in the last couple of races?...anyway enjoy the race tomorrow -the UK's ITV(1) Formula(1) program starts 12.30pm.
